Manchester Airport - 10.11am, Wednesday.

After a long and tiring flight from Singapore we have safely arrived in Manchester for our delayed, delayed again, still delayed flight to Dublin.

This would be one of the grubbiest airport I have ever been to. Litter left lying around, waste bins overflowing and the floors are very dirty - not just this morning's dirt. After Singapore being so pristine it makes this look even worse.

Never-mind, we're on an adventure and every new experience adds to the story.

One of the group has just come back from buying a sandwich from Boots. She could have paid either three for 9 quid, or 2.50 each.  Mmmm, and we're not even in Ireland yet.

The flight time 'across the sea to Ireland' is around an hour, so we will have time this afternoon to rest up as tonight we are going on a literary pub crawl - drinks included! I imagine someone is going to drag us from pub to pub, all the while quoting James Joyce. Will let you know. To be sure and all, at all!

Singapore/Malaysia

Greeting from a very toasty Singapore. At present we are waiting for our shuttle to the airport for our long flight to Dublin.

Today we visited Jahor Bahru - just across the causeway into Malaysia. This required four passport stops, no photography & masses of stairs. All of this was dealt with in 32+ degrees C. Bit sticky by the end.

Malaysian people are very calm (well the ones we meet were) and our guide, Chan, kept us entertained with humorous quips about statistics. We toured a model village were we learned about old school remedies make with local plants, the usefulness of coconuts - there are over sixty varieties, watched a local dance and enjoy music, coconut cookies, cocoa & coffee. Kind of tourist-y, but kind of good.

From there we went to the mosque ground and found out more about how Sultans and Kings of Malaysia - there are many, have a five year roster. Each gets paid US$60,000 per month and his wife/wives get $30,000 each per month. Quite a good earner!

Another batik stop and it was back across the border.

What to do with a spare four hours when your hotel is on the famous Orchard Road?? Shop! Shop! Shop! Well, from all accounts most of us looked only, but more will probably come out about that later.

Coach is here, off to the airport.

Till next time - from Ireland,
